Some months after my thesis delibs, I rediscovered my old children’s books that I’ve kept since always. They were Adarna Books from my uncle - hard-bound, beautifully-illustrated by local artists, once had an audiocasette included, and were about local myths and legends. My most favorite one was Mariang Makiling, retold by Rene O. Villanueva and illustrated by Aelberto Escarriaga.
I was surprised that after all these years of drawing and creating stuff, I discovered that everything I learned from design were inspired by these books. I wasn’t aware of their huge influence on me until then - I subconsciously took the Escarriaga illustrations as inspirations for my style and my love for art nouveau.
I have always wanted to join Ang INK (Ang Illustrador ng Kabataan, ilustrators for children) because I want to inspire other kids to read and draw. I always miss the auditions but I’ll try next time - I wish I can draw a story that would make others love what they do and what they want to do.
Sorry for the delay, but here’s no. 2! :)
